Shit you should know!
Safety at Camp
Think of Mendocino Magic as Belden's outdoors-y big sister: She's wild, she's free, and her pathways are lined with rocks and poison oak. She's also full of ticks and mosquitoes, and while the lake is big and beautiful, the sun shining down can burn you to a crisp. So, more than ever, this year...
Bring sunscreen (waterproof is good- reef safe is even better)
Bring bug spray (one that conquers ticks)
Bring good shoes - The lake is a hike away; flip-flops won't cut it.
Bring Technu wipes If you know you are allergic to poison oak, and wash up after hiking.
Sanctuary will have some of these items, but better if you have a stash of your own. We will also have tick-pullers if you happen to get a rider.
Light It Up!
Notice that we haven't posted any pics of Mendicino Magic at night? That's because it's dark up there, so we need to BRING THAT LIGHT. Light yourselves, light your tent, light your campsite, and finally if you've got some left over, light those pathways near you.
Solar lights are awesome and there's plenty of sun each day to charge them. Let creativity rule and see what sort of renegade art you and your campmates can put together to light up your space!
... with Fire?
Nope! No charcoal grills, no fireworks, no open flames. There is one modest (but cool) fire installation close to the Lanai, but outside of that, no flames are allowed at Mendocino Magic. Well-attended propane stoves are permitted for food-preparation. Speaking of...
Food & Drinks
The new site doesn't have a restaurant, bar or store on site. There are some camper-organized culinary offerings in the works, but you should plan to bring your own meals and drinks, and of course, we encourage sharing.
With that said... Because we love you all, and also because we love tacos, we've arranged for a local vendor to sell a variety of tacos at 6:00 Saturday evening. For one night only, Paco's Tacos will be onsite slinging a variety of tacos, including veggie, for $5 a pop.
We will also be selling ice for $5 a bag for a few hours each evening while supplies last. So remember to bring some cash!
Local Services
The town of Laytonville is a convenient 10-minute drive away, and has all essential services such as shopping, restaurants, gas, and cell service. CFIU will allow in & outs, but we request everyone limit their trips and please be extra-careful driving, especially at night. Please obey all marked traffic speed limits and do not drive under the influence. If you are not sure if you should be driving, DON'T.
Leave No Trace
Camp Fuckitup is a Leave No Trace event. We all, as a community, will pack out what we pack in! Please do your part to leave excess packaging at home, bring aluminum versus glass, and pack reusable plates, cups, and utensils. Cigarette butts need to be contained, we'll get fined for any found on the ground after the event.
Keep your camp area and Mendocino Magic clean by using the provided bags to take out what you bring in. If you wish to drop off your garbage (for a fee) before driving home, the Laytonville Transfer Station is located nearby at 1825 Branscomb Rd (directions) and is open until 4pm Sunday.
Respect
Consent is sexy! We pride ourselves on our community values of respect and self determination. We take violation of these values and of others’ personal boundaries extremely seriously. CFIU’s zero tolerance policy dictates that anyone who engages in unwanted behavior (verbal or physical) toward another camper will be immediately ejected from the event and barred from future attendance.
Some Final Notes
We've thrown a lot of at you by now; just a few more quick items...
Camp only in designated areas. We will guide you to where to set up, don't go rogue.
Leave the nature where it is. Don't take anything, including rocks and fish. Respect the space, as well as the staff and any other visitors.
Mendocino Magic forbids styrofoam, so leave it at home.
No amplified sound after 10pm.
No megaphone sirens, or obnoxious amplified noises like alarms or dubstep.
No dogs please.
If you are bringing a drone, speak to the staff about no-fly zones.
As always, no glass on the beach
And that's that! As you can tell by now, this year is much more of a campingevent than our previous years in Belden; there is a bit less infrastructure, but there is a lot more space, both physically and creatively, so make it your own! Our little campout here has a brand new canvas, bring your paint! We can't wait to see what you do.
